How does the amount of traffic vary over my area?

The amount of air traffic over a certain area will vary based on a number of factors, including:

  • Where the area is in relation to the airport
  • Which flow of traffic is in effect (westerly, easterly, northerly, southerly), which is predominantly determined by wind direction and wind speed
  • Time of day (traffic levels are much lower at night, and different procedures can be used)
  • Runway availability (runways can sometimes be unavailable for reasons such as routine maintenance)

Areas overflown during westerly and easterly flows will have the most traffic overhead as these flows are used for approximately 95 per cent of the operations year-round.

The interactive report below shows the number of days in the year that your area had a certain range of flights overhead. For example, an area might have had 100 days with 50 flights or fewer overhead. The report adds up to 365 days and flight counts are approximate.
