Why can’t aircraft fly somewhere else?
Given the population density of the Greater Toronto Area, it is not possible for aircraft to come into and out of Toronto Pearson without flying over residential areas. However, the procedures in place ensure that aircraft are approaching and departing the airport in the quietest way they can, as airports and the industry continue to make improvements in noise management.
But why can’t they fly a few kilometers in a different direction?
Aircraft flying into and out of Toronto Pearson use standard routes that allow aircraft to be safely and efficiently managed in the sky. These routes are set by NAV CANADA in the Canada Air Pilot and are based on design standards set by Transport Canada.
However, there are opportunities to fly over less populated areas when traffic levels are low such as at night.
