I hear a rumbling noise but don’t see anything. What is that?
Communities located close to a runway end may hear a rumbling sound produced by an aircraft’s engine when it is taking off in the opposite direction. This is referred to as rollback noise.
This is especially true at night when ambient noise is quieter. The rumbling sound is loudest when the plane is 45 degrees from the runway centreline. During light wind conditions, rollback noise may project farther from the source than it normally would.
